Session Incidents Queries and Asides

J (THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, To-day. Seven more speakers added the i weight oF their arguments to the Adi dress-in-Reply debate yesterday. These seven were the Hon. O. J. Hawken. j Messrs. E. A. Ransom, D. G. Sullivan, j W. D. Lysnar. J. Horn. T. W. Rhodes i and M. J. Savage—two each from the j Labour and Lib-Nat-United Parties, j and three, including a Minister of the i Crown, from the Reform benches The debate is now opening on to the fifth j day. Assuming that nearly every menir ; ber will wish to speak to the’ House. Hansard, and his constituency, the flow ; of argument is yet far from exhausted. In Another Place The Wellington races open to-mor-row, and will be continued on Thursday and on Saturday. If precedent sets a safe guide then the Address-in-Reply debate may easily be carried on in the presence of benches not closely tenanted. Several members, it is quite likely, will be in “another place.” and that place will not be the Legislative Council. * * * Grammar School Grant The Minister of EducaUon has informed Mr. W. E. Parry, Auckland Central, that he has approved of a grant for the addition of a new classroom and new art room, in wood, to the Auckland Girls’ Grammar School. * * * Leave of Absence

Sir Apirana Ngata, who has had leave of absence since the opening of the session, was present when the House opened to-day. Mr. E. D. McLennan, Franklin, is among those still away. His leave, on account of illness in his family, was yesterday extended a further four days. Talking to Waiheke

ne ® l ? f ° r a new cable from Auck- ,' Vaihe ke Island, and the procrastinatton °f the P. and T. Department in dealing with the need, were set out by Mr. J. A. Lee in a question asked of the Postmaster-General. The sa fri c ° nnection "’as unsatisfactory-, sard Mr. Lee, and the result of representattons made on the subject had not been successful. _ * * * Renk Rate’s Corollary , That the rate on State advances should be a corollary of the rate on bank overdrafts was the plain inference front a question put to the Mintster of Finance by Mr. R. McKeer ,^ h ?ha S K ed in view of the reduction m the bank rate, the interest charges on state advances would be correspondingly lowered.

* * * Parliamentary Question Box Inquiries made of Cabinet Ministers by members of the Lower House when op .® ned yesterday afternoon touched Family Allowances (Mr a Harris), statistics of Post Office Savings Bank (Mr. H. E. Holland), accommodation for stock in the busy period (Mr. J. R. Hamilton), gazetting of Fertiliser Act (Mr. Eliott) and thf pnce received for rural bonds (Mr. ,T McCombs). * * iff Jockeys the Scapegoats? . ?°h°. ot recent racing sensations, m which jockeys were disqualified for a conspiracy at Rotorua, was heard wl ? ep Mr. J. A. Lee. Auckland East, asked if it was desirable that only the instruments for the fraud should be punished. His question suggested the advisability of independent efforts to protect the racing public through the appointment of controlling officials responsible to the State, and not to the Racing Conference. * & * The Book of Revelations There seemed to be a sting in a couple of questions of which Mr W A- Veitch, Wanganui, gave notice when tne House reopened yesterday. Mr Veitch asked for a return showing, at an ear.y date, the salary and all conditions of appoinlment of Mr. H. H. Sterling as general manager of railways He asked also for a return showing the amount of superannuation payable to members of the recently-retired Railway Board, and the length of their service. In another question Mr, V eitch asked for a return of all Government employees sent abroad during the past five years, the cost of their trips, the reason therefor, and the length of service completed by the ofiicers concerned after their return. * * * Private Bills Read Private Bills read a first time this afternoon included Mr. Howard'* Christ s College Bill, to give Christ's College, Christchurch, greater security of and the London and New {^?' a " d k B ‘" <ilr - E,io «). dealing with the incorporation of a new bank of issue.
