Variable condensers, if not protected by a suitable casing, should be cleaned out occasionally. Clean these units out with a pipe stem cleaner, to remove dust and dirt. It is always preferable to go to the best possible ground, even though the lead is a little long. Normally this is the cold water systqm, between the meter and the mains.
