NEW REGENT

SEA-LIONS AND DIVING NYMPHS A humorous and exciting story, starring Bebe Daniels, is “Feel My Pulse,” now being shown at the New Regent Theatre. In this story Miss Daniels plays the role of a girl who has a sanatoriuh bequeathed to her. She imagines she is ill. When she gets to the sanatorium she ficiT-S it in the hands of a bootlegging gang, ruled by two unscrupulous leaders, played by Richard Arlen and William Powell. BLit Bebe steps in and tries to take care of her patients. She gets into all kinds of mix-ups, and even into a battle. Arlen, who has fallen in love with her, warns her to leave. She refuses. Finally, when Powell attempts to break into her room, she realises her danger, and decided to take Arlen’s advice. Then she finds that Arlen’s life is in danger, because the bootleggers think he has tipped off their hiding place. So Bebe stays, and when Powell’s gang attacks Arlen, she keeps them at bay with the aid of her surgical instruments, druigs and medicines. An added attraction on the programme is the appearance of Captain Winston’s sea lions and diving nymphs. The staging of the act has been a tremendous undertaking. The great steel tank, filled with 6,000 gallons of water, necessitated extensive reinforcements of the stage. It is doubtful whether a more elaborate and spectacular set has ever been seen in New Zealand. Under water the lions seemed to have just as keen knowledge of the directions as when on the stage. Twoinch glass forms the front of the huge tank, but “Ginger,” the comedian of the troupe, can hear every order. Suitable incidental music is provided by the Regent Operatic Orchestra, under the baton of Mr. Maurice Guttridge.
