“ANNA KARENINA”
AT STRAND ON FRIDAY Where are the Crown jewels of Russia? Many of them have been scattered to the four corners of the earth, but faithful reproductions have again caused them to gleam as of old—on the screen. Greta Garbo, the famous Swedish screen charmer, wears a reproduction of the complete set of Russian jewels during her role of Anna Karenina in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s filmisation of Tolstoy’s “Anna Karenina,” coming to the Strand Theatre on Friday. Rene Hubert, a Parisian, for many years associated with Poiret, the famous gown designer, learned the details of these jewels while in Paris, and was able to successfully reproduce them for the picture. John Gilbert and Miss Garbo play together in
“Anna Karenina” for the first time since their remarkable hit in “Flesh and the Devil.” The story is a spectacular romance of Russia before the revolution, set in spectacular surroundings, with gorgeous costumes, uniforms, and other incidentals.
