RAILWAY SALARIES

N.Z. AND AUSTRALIA SOME INTERESTING FIGURES The salaries of executive railway officers in Australia and New Zealand were made the subject of an article in a recent Australian publication. The chief engineer of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Dr. J. J. C. Bradfield, draws £3,000 a year. One of the last acts of the Labour Government of New South Wales was to increase liis salary to that amount from £ 1,700 a year. When the Fay-Raven Commission visited New South Wales in 1924 it recommended that the salary of the Chief Commissioner of Railways there be raised from £3,000 a year to. £5,000, which he now receives.

The chief executive railway officers of New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia each receives £5,000 a year, but those of Queensland and West Australia are paid £2,000 a year. The late general manager of the New Zealand Railways received £3,000 a year, but the newly appointed general manager, Mr. H. H. Sterling, receives £SOO less. A considerable reduction in salary was made when the recently disbanded Board of Management was formed some time ago.
