AURORA AUSTRALIS SEEN IN CHRISTCHURCH

TELEGRAPH INTERRUPTED Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. Beams of white light resembling searchlights flashed in the southern sky last evening, heralding the Aurora Australis. Visibility was marred by a heavy bank of clouds which hid the southern horizon from view. On the south-western and south-eastern flanks the sky was a dull red, giving the impression of a reflection of a big Are. The -white beams of light gradually spread across the sky, until they merged into one, later changing into a light green. Warning of the coming of the aurora was received in the Christchurch telegraph office early in the evening, when great difficulty was experienced in receiving messages, this being: due to the electrical earth currents set up.
