SPEEDING PAST SCHOOLS
TWO MOTORISTS FINED As the result of complaints made by the Papatoetoe School Committee to the traffic inspector regarding the speed of motor-cars past the school intersection, two prosecutions were brought against motorists in the Otahuhu Police Court yesterday, before Mr. F H Levien, S.M. Mrs. Nina Busing: and O. T. Hughes were each charged with driving motors'?' 3 past the Papatoetoe Public School, on the Great South Road, in a manner dangerous to the public namely, at a speed of 30 miles an hour. . evidence the inspector said that this was a particularly dangerous intersection, and the speed laid down under the motor regulations was 15 miles an hour. At the time the offences were committed children were dispersing from the school grounds. th ? d !t ence - Mr - T - N. Holmden, solicitor to the A.A.A., said that there was no danger, as no accident had occurred. and he drew the magistrate’s attention to the fact that the official notice boards, as required by the regulations, had not been erected. To this the inspector retorted that as the warning notices erected by the ~nrt Automobile Association were still be'ing displayed, it was not for Mr. Holmden to criticise them. " Mr. Levien said that although no accident had occurred, there was no need to wait for an accident before it could be said that it was dangerous to drive past a school at 30 miles an hour Lach defendant was fined £2 and costs'.
