AUCKLAND’S DAY?
HOPES FOR TRENTHAM TO-MORROW DOZEN NORTHERNERS ENGAGED COMING next in importance to the Great Northern and Grand National meeting - , and coming - between these two big - jumping fixtures, the Wellington Racing - Club's winter fixture is of first importance, and the meeting, which opens to-morrow, has a good deal to interest the racing world, Aucklanders particularly.
The Wellington meeting opens tomorrow, and will be continued on Thursday and Saturday. For the first day the two principal races are the Wellington Steeplechase and Whyte Memorial Handicap, while on Thursday there is the Parliamentary Handicap, with the Winter Hurdles as the principal attraction on Saturday. With no fewer than a dozen Auckland horses engaged to-morrow, and one or two others to be produced on the second and third days, the interest of Northerners promises to be well maintained, from the viewpoint of both racing and finance! It would occasion little surprise if King Lu (Stewards’ Handicap), and Beau Cavalier (Wellington Steeplechase) got into the money to-morrow. Others that are possibilities in their engagements are Queen Arch, Mia Bella and Kauri Park, the latter pair being -in tho Trentham Hurdles. The going to-morrow promises to be as heavy as usual at this period of the year. With eight races on the card each day an early start is to be made. The first item is the 11.30 VITTORIA HURDLES Of £270 : lg miles.
Several promising novices figure here. First mention must be made of the Atareria-Home Made bracket, both of whom won on the Napier-Hastings circuit last month for Commendation’s owner, and both are susceptible to improvement. San Pedro is coming down in the weights, and recent information states that he may well stage a come-back. Sir Moment, a double winner at Otaki five weeks ago, loves the mud, so may be dangerous. In the mood Trolius is capable of winning easily. Patuki showed winning form at Hastings, and Braeman will be well suited by the distance. Hangawera may start in the third race, Olympic is a good and promising sort, and Ruby Ring has done his recent racing over the bigger fences. Indications point to backers making good favourites of ATARERIA and TROILUS A nice field of 18 will contest th# minor event, the
A quartette that appear to stand out on their own are Consent, Le Champ, Roscrea and Mark Mint, all of whom have shown good form. Of the others, those that are entitled to a fair
measure of support are Historic, Gold Cure, Rameses, Solgele, Lancing Star, Lucky Light (from the Waddell stable, which has had practically a mortgage on this event for several seasons), Tea Rose and Tripos. However, the four first-mentioned make most appeal; and, having shown that they can handle heavy ground, favouritism may rest between ROSCREA and CONSENT The first contest over the big fences is third on the list, the
Several of the above have shown good form, notably Radiate, Matu, San Fera, Jovial, Sir Wai, Captain Sarto, Mainspring, Son o’ Mine and Hangawera, and this is the bunch from which the placed division is expected to come. The top-weight has a lot of pace on the fiat, and with Matu, Mainspring and Son o’ Mine makes a formidable quartette for the others to meet. The two most fancied by backers may be RADIATE and MATU Quite early on the programme is the open sprint, which has attracted a very fair field. This is the 1.30 STEWARDS’ HANDICAP Of £4OO ; 6 furlongs.
It is quite on the cards that the bracketed Auckland pair, King Lu and Waltzer, will wind up favourite. The former is a rare winter sprinter, and that he is in great form he proved at Ellerslie last Saturday week. Should King Lu miss to-morrow there are two other sprints on the other days. Others that are expected to be in the boom among backers are Taboo, Duke Abbey, Oration, Monoghan, Bonogne, The Swell, Catkin and Fee Simple, while a fair amount of interest will be focussed upon the efforts of Bally- ] moy 11. The pick of this lot may be ; Oratoin (who raced very well at the j
Great Northern meeting). Bonogne and The Swell. Probably most financial backing will be forthcoming for KING LU and ORATION The way is now paved for the big jumping contest, in which the probable starters, with their riders and jockeys, are the following: 2.10 WELLINGTON STEEPLECHASE
Small but select about sums this field up, for probably Glendowie is the only good ’chaser not engaged. Auckland holds a pretty strong hand with Beau Cavalier, Kawini and Pouri, and it is not an impossible contingency that they will all get in the money. Beau Cavalier will appreciate the level course after Ellerslie’s tiring hill, and with Henderson to keep him in hand he must be given a royal show. Tull too will come in for support, but it is just possible that they will go too fast
for him, for pace counts at Trentham almost as much as jumping ability. For this reason too, Comical is not to be forgotten. Twelve months ago he went with Beau Cavalier in the lead for over half the journey; he cannot be ruled out, but then neither can he be recommended as a betting proposition. Kawini might very well have beaten Glendowie in the Winter Steeplechase five weeks ago had he not been made so much use of, and as he must have come on since then he really appears to have a first rate chance. Now what of Maunga, whom the backers are beginning to leave severely alone. If he takes it into his head he may win, but the same remarks can be applied to him as have been expressed as regards Comical, If Pouri completes the course he must have a chance, but such fast jumping as he provided spectators at Ellerslie with last Monday week may get him into trouble at his fences. The Babe is reported as a very unlikely starter. Of Passin’ Through it can be said only that he possesses a jumper’s chance. There are only seven certain runners, but it should furnish a most interesting contest. Favouritism may be disputed by BEAU CAVALIER and KAWINI Following the big steeplechase comes the
Several of these are in the Winter Hurdles on the third day, so that the form here will be closely watched—particularly by the stewards! Of the dozen remaining in there are seven that catch the eye: Aberfeldy, Gaze, Peneus, Mia Bella, Kilburn, Kauri Park and Revel, and from this lot backers will have a problem to face in fining them down still further. Kaikahu, a useful sort, has been omitted from the hst on account of being under a cloud of late. Two that will be well sought after are GAZE and ABERFELDY The worst race of the day that will confront the punters is the 3.30 WHYTE MEMORIAL HDCP. Of £SOO ; 1 mile.
The mile barrier faces a straight three lurlongs stretch along the back but even so a horse has to be drawn not further out th;jn the middle of the
field, and not too close in. unless an exceptionally brilliant beginner so that a whole lot depends on ’ tht marble drawn by the Jockey. Paitonu is at the top of his form, and althoack he will have a difficult task If th ( going is really bad. he should pertorr well. Others that read well are Nukumai. Black Mint. Royal Damon, Ttboo Day Guard. Queen Arch, Town Bant Horomea, Beaumont. Orazone, HuikaT Bonogne. Fairy Herald. Avro, Biaox and Gold Mint. It seems a proposition from the bettors' point o' view, and in desperation they may for " QUEEN ARCH and ROYAL DAMON The long day closes with the 4.10 TE ARO HANDICAP
Of this field of 23 the best woud appear to be Chelone, Kalos, otairi King Mart. Carinthia. Rotowhero’ Pangolin. The Mug. Meadowbank, De,.' pot and Freeze Out. although there are other promising sorts engaged lik“ly to provide a turn-up. Probably a pair that will come in for heavy support are KING MART and FREEZE CHJT THIRD DAY WINTER HURDLES Of £1,000: 2i miles.
R. Reed will have the mounts on Beaumont, Just So, Duke Abbey and Pangolin on the opening day at Trentham. while T. Green will be on The Mug, Royal Damon and Toxeuma. No doubt the latter will secure a ride In the Stewards* Handicap following his arrival, although meanwhile he is without a mount. The battle for the season’s honours promises to be keenly fought. Other riding engagements known to have been made are as follow: L- G. Morris.—Consent. Avro and Otairi. A. E. Ellis—Tuke, Roscrca, Black Mint, Catkin and Carinthia. S. Henderson—Beau Cavalier. Royal Mint and Quincoma (second day). H. Dulieu—Kauri Park. A. Tinker—Queen Arch and King Lu. R. Olive—Kawini. A. S. Ellis—Captain Sarto. A. McDonald—Maunga, Brigadier Bill and Ruby Ring. I. Tilson—Aberfeldy. R. Beale—Ring Boy. *VV. J. Bowden—Gaze, XukumaL
Radiate look the pick of the t<*> weights, and Mainspring appears to be the best of the lighter division. If both King Lu and Waltzer contest the Stewards Handicap that bracket may be favourite, and the hardest they will have to beat may be Duk« Abbey and Oration. The field of seven left in the Wellington Steeplechase should provide a good contest- Beau Cavalier is favourite, but now that he will a very heavy course to carry his IV&* others are advancing in demand, especially Tuki and Kawini, while Comical's good schooling has brought him into prominence, but he might not see the whole journey out. Maunga be ridden by A. McDonald, but usually he shows a distaste for very heavy going. Pouri may not be seasoned enough, and Passin* Through has passed his prime. When the machine closes Beau Cavalier may be at a short price, with Tuki and Kawini next m demand. As is always the case, the .* Memorial Handicap is a very difficult race, and of the many with chance* Xukumai, Taboo and Beaumont ma. be included. As Brigadier Bill has been drawn from the big steeplechase n will not be overlooked in the T l *®®' tham Hurdles. The bottom weig** are a bad lot, and Gaze and may be the top weight’s moat dang®** ous opponents. __ _ In the big field for the To Aro Ran dicap King Mart, The Mug and Ran golin may be among the choice backers.
