FOR CHILD’S SAKE

WOMAN’S FALSE STATEMENT OF BIRTH JUDGE’S SERIOUS VIEW Pleading guilty to making a false declaration to the registrar of births, a young woman, was ordered by Mr. Justice MacGregor in the Supreme Court this morning to come up for sentence within 12 months of called upon. For the accused, Mr. Gatenby said that she had no intention of doing wrong but acted in ignorance- She had given the child’s name as that of the father, who had been keeping company with her for four years. He had recently obtained a divorce and intended shortly to marry the woimn. The prisoner thus wished to give the child an honourable name. Counsel asked that the offence be treated as technical.

His Honour took a serious view. 14<• pointed out that the woman’s statement indicated that she was well aware of what she was doing. She had told the registrar a parcel of lies. The case, however, was not one for gaol.
