Old Man Perishes in Burning House
GAVE LIFE FOR SISTER TWO WOMEN INJURED Press Association DUNEDIN, To-day. Horace Mann, aged 61, was burned to death early this morning in a two-storey house in York Place, occupied by him and his two elderly single sisters, Mary Jane, an invalid, and Ellen Mann. The former is suffering from shock and the latter from burns to her hands and head. Neither is in a dangerous condition. The fire occurred in the sisters’ bedroom and was caused by a candle igniting a curtain. Mann got the invalid sister out, and then returned. He was not seen again, his body being found by the brigade at the top of the stairs. The other sister, in seeking to escape, wandered into a shed, where she was trapped by flames shooting from the burning building, until the brigade got her out. The house and furniture were extensively damaged.
