IN DIRTY CANTON GAOL

BRITISH BUSINESSMAN INDIGNATION AROUSED (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) Times Cable. LONDON, Saturday. The Shanghai correspondent of “The Times” says there is indignation among British residents at Hong-Kong and Canton about the arrest and detention all night in a filthy cell of a British merchant, Mr. Lillicrap, at Canton. The trouble arose over papers covering the importation of wines and spirits into Canton. The Chinese wine tax bureau officials arrested the merchant and his clerk. They threw them into a small cell with 23 Chinese criminals. The two men were incarcerated until next morning, when the British Consul secured their release. The Chinese Foreign Minister subsequently expressed regret for the occurrence. A claim for compensation and the punishment of those concerned is pending.
