The Rev. J. Beaufort, chaplain at King’® College, returned by the Arawa yesterday afternoon from a trip to England. Mr. E. solicitor, of Auckland, who recently underwent an operation to his eyes in Sydney, is progressing well. Mr. J. A. Howard, formerly an officer jn the Royal Air Force, arrived in Auckland yesterday by the Arawa from England, Mr. F. Towler, a director of a Bradford firm of wool merchants, arrived by the Arawa yesterday and is staying at the Royal Hotel. Mr. H. W. Reid, sharebroker of Dunedin, was the guest of members of the Auckland Stock Exchange at the midday call to-day.
Mr. Ernest Jenner, L.R.A.M., arrived from England by the Arawa yesterday to take up a position with the Wellington Training College. Miss Ellen Melville was last evening appointed by the City Council as its representative on the board of management of the Elam School of Art. Mr. L. C. Ayers, of London, and manager of the largest garage of the London General Omnibus Co., arrived by the Arawa yesterday. He will probably reside In New Zealand. The Rev. J. Lamb Harvey, for seven years in charge of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, left to-day by the Maheno for Sydney on his way to England. Captain L. G. Goss, staff officer in charge of No. 2 Regimental District, who is stationed at Paeroa, has passed the Entrance examination of a military staff college at Camberly. He leaves for England early in October. Mr. Robert Parker, who will in October complete 50 years as organist at the Wellington pro-Cathedral, was congratulated and thanked in a resolution passed at the Diocesan Synod yesterday. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.. has been appointed chairman of the Auckland, Kaitemata and Parnell licensing committees, in place of Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M, who is on leave; Mr. A. M. Mow'em. S.M., Napier, Hawke’s Bay, and Waipawa, in the place of Mr. H. A. loung, S.M.; Mr. H. A. Young, S.M.. Ellesmere and Lyttelton, in place of Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M. HOTEL REGISTER. Grand: Mr. R.
