Schorr May Take To Hurdling
TRAINER W. STONE’S TEAM TE AWAMUTU, Thursday. Included among the successful stables at Te Awamutu is that of W. Stone, who arrived here about four years ago from Hawke’s Bay. He has not a lengthy string in training, but each year he has produced at least one very useful handicap performer. The stables are adjacent to the Waipa Racing Club’s course, on which the training is carried out. Included in W. Stone’s string is the bay gelding Ballachulish, and although highly bred (Kilboy—Matatane), has been somewhat of a disappointment, and it is stated, will not be persevered with. Ballachulish won a cup event at Whangarei last year. Owing to an infirmity it is unlikely he will race again. An unnamed bay gelding by Chief Ruler from Lucella is the pick of the bunch. He is only 21 months old, but has the appearance of a three-year-old, and judging by looks and breeding should give a good account of himself. He has engagements in classic events, which include an Australian Derby, of 1929, so that if he shows ability, should not lack opportunity to pay his way. Unlucky Filly Another of the same breed in the stable is The Begum, who has a record of five seconds, without registering a win. She has been turned out for a few months, having just been brought in. Her owner and trainer are in accord in deciding not to hurry the filly’s preparation. Schorr is considered the tradesman of the Stone stable. He is a rather plainlooking gelding by Day Comet from Red Pine, being bred on the right lines for a jumping career. He was tried over the obstacles and pleased by jumping naturally; but owing to a fall recently he received bruises. However, he will be given further instructions, and as he is solidly built, should prove a success. Good Family » A mare that should perform well In the coming season is Loveband, rising five years, by King Mark,. and as she has already a win and a dead heat out of limited starts, she is not without prospects. A half-sister, by Lord Quex, is the bay mare Liaison, rising four years, who, since the New Year, has registered three wins. A full brother to Liaison looks a very likely sort, being compactly built, with nice back and quarters. It is not likely he will b© raced till after Christmas. Llandudno is not at present in active commission, but has apparently recovered from his leg ailment. He will in all probability be brought back to duty in a few weeks. The Begum and her younger brother were bred and are owned by the Te Awamutu sportsman, Mr. A. J. McGovern, who last year sent their dam, Lucella, to Poverty Bay on a visit to the fashionably-bred English sire, Hunting Song. Lucella is back in Te Awamutu again. She is a half-sister to Statuette, Arch Marella and Penella, all winners.
