Knockout Soccer
FIRST CHATHAM CUP CONTEST Y.M.C.A. Meets Belmont TO-MORROW sees a temporary break in the Soccer championship series in order that the first round of the Chatham Cup contest may be disposed of. The luck of the draw has brought Belmont and Y.M.C.A. to renew last Saturday’s battle, when the colts surprised the Young Men with an odd-goal victory, and to-morrow’s struggle for survival should produce an exciting knock-out. The curtain-raiser is a junior championship match between the H.M.S. Philomel and Glen Eden, which will provide a willing tussle. Onehunga meets Northcote at home in a senior championship game.
Any doubts as to Belmont’s qualification for senior rank have been removed in the second round of the championship, and it is a pleasurable duty to recall the gloomy prophesy concerning its winning prospects. In the last three games at Devonport the Belmont youngsters have put up a great record in beating Thistle 3 —l, losing to Shore I—2,1 —2, and beating Y.M.C.A. 2—l. That is an outstanding performance which entitles the senior “babies” to the utmost respect, and to-morrow’s knockout will provide a lively contrast 3n stylos. A difference in methods comparable to a bustling fighter meeting a clever boxer, and science is not everything in a knockout bout. Belmont has the habit of playing right on top of its oipponents, and harrying them with swift raids and long-passing rushes. Its defence is very solid and the attack full of life and pep. Y.M.C.A. has one of the most skilful front lines in the competition, but it has been disorganised by frequent changes, and finds it difficult -to cultivate cohesion. To-morrow’s game should be a dogged
clash, and it will not be surprising l if extra time is necessary to determine the winner.
