CONSERVATIVES REVOLT

EXCITING SITUATION SUPERTAX ON DEAD MEN JEERING LABOUR MEMBERS (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian P.A.—United Service) LONDON, Wednesday. An exciting situation, due to the most formidable revolt among the Conservatives in tl*s Parliament, was created by oa the Finance Bill in the ef ©cnasaons to-day. Sir Henry C. Buckingham, Conservative member for Guildford, Surrey, moved to delete the provision in the Bill that the estate of a deceased supertax payer should be charged for the last full year of his life. He contended that this would entail the payment of double tax for the year and that the Treasury would unjustly gain £1,000,000 a year. Sir Robert Horne, Sir J. Marriott and Colonel J. Gretton, Conservative members for Hillhead (Glasgow), York and Burton respectively, joined in the protest.

Labour members did not take part in the debate, but some of them interrupted the proceedings and jeered at the pleas for the payers of the supertax. Sir Henry Buckingham pressed his motion for a division, but it was defeated by 200 votes to 59, the Labour members and the Liberals not voting.
