BURNED-TENT TRAGEDY
SUICIDE BY SHOOTING STRING TIED TO TRIGGERS (From Our Own Correspondent.) KAIKOHE, Wednesday. An inquest was held to-day in the Court House, Kaikohe, regarding the death of Victor Macken, who was found dead in his burned whare at Awarua. Mr. W. J. Worthington, J.P., acting-coroner, presiding, over a Jury of four. Macken had a bush-felling contract on Messrs. Morfette Brothers’ farm, where he was camped, and was last seen alive at the camp by one of his Maori employees on Saturday morning.
Mr. L. Morfette visited the camp on Sunday afternoon about 4.30 o’clock and found the tent had been destroyed by fire, and deceased lying dead on his partially burned bunk. Closer examination. revealed a shotgun on the body with charred string fastened to both triggers, and one cartridge discharged. The other barrel was loaded and the trigger at full cock. The right side of Macken’s head and face were blown away. Macken had occasionally complained of heart trouble, the result of being gassed in the war. A verdict that death was caused by a gunshot wound self-inflicted was returned. He was a widower, having a family of two sons and one daughter, residing in Auckland.
