HARBOUR FIGURES

REVENUE EXCEEDS ESTIMATF' LOCKERS FOR CARRIERS Although below the figures for the corresponding period last year, the Auckland Harbour Board’s revenue for the nine months ended June 30 exceeded the estimate by £2,186. Reporting to the board yesterday, the treasurer, Mr. C. F. Garratt, said the cash receipts from the Waitemata Harbour for June were £28,762, a decrease of £1,125 on the figures for June, 1927. The figures for the nine months were £285,584, a decrease of £5,995 on the 1927 period. The Manukau Harbour receipts for June were £574, a decrease of £147, and for the nine months £5,290, a decrease of £483. As a result of a letter received from the Auckland Chamber of Commerce and a deputation from the Master Carriers' Association regarding a complaint in connection with the disappearance of a case of gin, while in the process of examination at the wharf, it was decided that the board provide gear lockers for use by carriers in all Customs examination rooms, and that the doors in the partitions be locked, and the keys left in charge of the board’s storekeepers in the examination rooms. The application of the Auckland Fishermen’s Corporation for the dredging of the approach to the fish market at Nelson Wharf was declined. The harbourmaster reported that it was always shallow at that point at low spring tide, and that to effect an improvement would necessitate expensive dredging. As it was only a temporary berthing place he did not consider it would be warranted. The application of Messrs. Slyfleld and Wilson asking for the board’s approval to the effluent from septic tanks being discharged Into Whau Creek was refused. The engineer reported that in his opinion the summer flow of the creek would be insufficient. Mr. Sinton was appointed honorary wharfinger at Hobsonville in place of Mr. H. Otto, resigned.
