WEARING OF CASSOCKS
SYNODSMAN OBJECTS BISHOP’S WISH, NOT MANDATE (From Our Otcn Correspondent.) HAMILTON, Tuesday. Should clergymen wear cassccks at Synod sessions? This question was raised by Mr. G. C. Stevenson, of Ohura, at the first sitting of the Diocesan Synod to-day. He formally moved that in the opinion of Synod, cassocks were not desirable at sessions. Archdeacon Cowie explained that the Archbishop had asked all swnodsmen to wear gowns. Bishop Cherrington had only asked them to wear cassocks; he did not command them to do so. Although the practice of wearing < assocks out of church had gone out of fashion it was quite in order. “It seems to me it is absolutely wanting in courtesy to raise this point ° he added. “We shall continue wearing them. The Bishop ruled Mr. Stevenson’s motion out of order. “Is your wish to be a mandate over all of us?” asked Mr. Stevenson, indignantly. “I have reasons for claiming this, and I demand the right to move this motion.” There was nothing further said from the chair and no decision was eached.
