Riccarton Horses Galloping Well

CANDIDATES FOR TRENTHAM LIMERICK PREPARING FOR RANDWICK (Special to THE B L’N ) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday, j All the horses who competed at Asli- ; burton on Saturday were out for steady i exercises at Riccarton this morning, | looking the better for their racing over ; the week-end, but spring tasks were | considered sufficient for of them, i Limerick was given his first sprint i since his return from his successful i autumn campaign at Randwick. and ! the Limond gelding moved very freely ! over three furlongs with his stable ! mate, Arikiwai, th£ time being 40 2-5. It is doubtful if Limerick as ever looked so well as at present. He bears a much more robust appearance than in tlie autumn, and though he has been restricted to easy work for some time ! the champion will need much fast work to get into proper racing trim. Highly Spoken Of Gold Mint, who will leave for Trentham on Saturday with other members of IT. Nurse’s stable, galloped resolutely over seven furlongs with Lancer in the smart time of 1.32 3-5. Gold Mint was travelling very easily toI ward the end. and had to be hard held to finish on terms with his companions. The Catmint gelding is easily the most improved horse at Riccarton. and he will carry solid Southern support in his Trentham engagement. It lias been announced that J. Campbell will be his pilot. Roscrea, whose outing at Ashburton on Saturday seems to have cleaned him up, sprinted over half a mile with his stable mate. Island Fastness, in 51 3-5. j There was little between the pair at the end, but Roscrea was hard held and could have easily drawn away from j his companion had he been required. i The Rossendale youngster, who will be | ridden by A. E. Elite at Trentham, is j likely to start favourite in his race on j the opening day of the carnival, and should be very hard to beat. MARTARMA AS A SPRINTER Martarma, who is gradually getting into racing trim again, showed surprising speed in his half mile sprint with his stable mate, Tuahine, and by reeling off that distance in the smart time of 50 4-5 he registered easily the best effort of the morning. It was an exceptionally good gallop on the part of Martarma, who is carrying .-urplus condition, and what was significant waj that he pulled up well. F. Christmas has little fears of the Great Northern Derby winner failing to stand up to hard training. When the colt’s near foreleg filled some time age he did not actually go lame, and since his spell he lias not shown the least signs of soreness. Zaragoza and Gay Crest sprinted five furlongs in 1.7 2-5, but they were not - sent against the watch. Though she j looks well Zaragoza ca Hot have much 1 chance of winning a race at Trentham

unless she improves considerably upon her Ashburton effort, which is uniikdy After racing at Wellington s.ie will te retired to the stud. Amorist and Greyfinch did well to record 1.6 2-5 for their : -2 ward, especially the latter, who shooH race prominently at her future eng>c*ments. p lans for Aberfeldy One of the features of the monun«s work was the brilliant display of jumping by Aberfeldy. In his recent schooling efforts he has not altogether impressed, but this morning he cleared »ix hurdles in excellent style. It has not definitely been decided whether he wii* be a. runner at Trentham, but it is mart them likely he will make the trip. Kaikahu has been showing signs •' unsoundness lately and has not had much strong work. However, he m*’ go to Trentham. and if he does ias rider will be the Riccarton horsemra. A. J. Peart. F. B. Jones will leave on Sai :rdf with Roscrea and Zaragoza for Wellington. Other trainers who will mai-* the trip on the same day are A. S. Wormald. wit ' k H. Nunc, Gold Mint. Oriflamb. Greynnch Lance and probably Chickweat: R. Lo||gi j will leave on Tuesday next with He*>ler, who will contest the hack hurdle events on the second and third days.
