Te Kuiti Does Well at Ellerslie

ANNUAL MEETING A GREAT SUCCESS

IN warm, almost spring-like, weather, the annual fixture of the Te Kuiti Racing Club was concluded at Ellerslie yesterday, and the meeting was a splendid financial success. The going was soft, and the attendance excellent for an off-day.

Yesterday the totalisator handled £40.328?., making a total for the two ; days of £83.953, compared with ! £28,4641 when the last gathering was i held at Te Kuiti. so it will be seen ! that the racing at Ellerslie should result in a substantial profit for the country body and materially assist in placing it on a much firmer financial basis. The racing was again interesting. ! with the opening event providing a dead-heat, not a usual incident in a two-mile hurdl e race. Queen Arch won the principal event, R. Reed having the mount, and with Green failing to steer a winner he and Reed are now level for the jockey’s premiership. Notes on the racing and details of results follow. Dead-Heat in the First But for losing an iron. Kauri Park must have won the King Country Hurdles outright, instead of deadheating with Potoanui. The former was a firm favourite* with £1,023, Potoanui £5lB, Karamu £443, and Rahepoto £4ll also coming in fo.r support. Rahepoto and Kauri Park were the leaders practically all the way, being followed past the stands the first time at four lengths intervals by Potoanui, with Uralla, Karamu, Mangani and Pekatahi. Running to the halfmile, the favourite dropped an iron, but he was kept going and was a shade in front, of Rahepoto into the straight, with Potoanui a dozen lengths back, and Karamu still further away at the head of the remainder. Potoanui put in a great effort in the straight and got up in time to dead-heat with Kauri Park, Rahepoto, who tired badly, being three lengths back third. A dozen lengths away was Karamu, and then at intervals Pekatahi, Mangani and Uralla. Bracket at a Price The well-backed division in the Hangatiki Handicap was soundly trounced. These were Oscar £1,511, Bahama £BO7, Eager Rose £772 and Killute £435, the latter being at a good price, with £256 on the winning bracket. They were let go after some delay, Wyoming, Arihana, Sulla, Abbot's Delight, Bluespear, Segment, Oscar, Pompeius and Komak being in the order named. At the end of a couple of furlongs Arihana was making play from Wyoming, Sulla, Bluespear, Oscar, Bahama and Komak, with Abbott's Delight heading the remainder. Crossing the top Storm Fiend moved up and was on the outside of Arihana turning for home, with Sulla, Oscar, Killute, Bahama and Pompeius following. Storm Fiend shot out in the straight and came on to win by a length from Killute, with Arihana half a length further off third. Next to cross the line were Pompeius, Eager Rose, Oscar, Segment, Golden Wedding and Komak. Queen Arch Scores Nicely By punching Queen Arch home in the Waitomo Handicap, Reed drew level to Green in the race for the jockeys’ premiership. Te Koroke was a £155 better favourite than the winner, while there was modest support for Thursby £717 and Mervette £599. Takuranga went away best out of the tapes, followed by Master Doon, Mervette, King Emerald, Gold Jacket, Te Koroke, Desert Glow, Queen Arch, High Pitch and Auriculus, the deavoured to get through on the rails, where the going was very soft, and it was that perhaps more than anything that kept him out of the money. An Even Break The positions of the three leading horsemen after the racing at Ellerslie and Ashburton now stands: T. Green 71, R. Reed 71, A. E. Ellis 65. Successful Trainers . A victory with Waltzer and King Lu on the opening day, followed byQueen Arch’s triumph in the chief event on the second day, placed the Te Aroha trainer, R. B. Hines, at the head of the list of winning trainers, and incidentally at the top of the winning owners’ list. Beau Cavalier further enhanced his reputation by adding a couple of wins on the flat to his credit, and thus placed the local trainer, S. Tooman, second on the Jißt. Those to score on one occasion were: W. Ryan (Ellerslie), Importer; R. Hannon (Cambridge), Tinokoa; R. J. McMiken (Te Rapa), Farndon; J. Williamson (Ellerslie), Star of tlie East; J. Lambess (Ellerslie), Kauri Park: E. C. Rae (Ellerslie), Potoanui: A. Morrow (Remuera), Storm Fiend; N. Cunningham (Ellerslie), Hyde Park; J. R. Tutchen (Frankton). Pouri; and R. E. Brown (Remuera), Thursby. Foster’s Treble No jockey who rode at Ellerslie on Saturday and Monday was responsible for an outstanding number of wins, the best performance going to F. Foster, who scored on Beau Cavaliere (twice) and Tinokoa. Three horsemen rode two winners, these being: L. Manson, Waltzer and Thursby; H. ’ Dulieu, Star of the East and Kauri ' Park; and J. Sharkey, Importer and ! Potoanui; a dead-heat is now included as a win. Those who scored a win apiece were: R. Syme, Farndon; A. Tinker, King Lu; R. Reed, Queen Arch; W. Ryan, Hyde Park; E. Warner, Pouri; and H. Jones, Storm Fiend. Winning Owners

last-named tailing off. Passing the five furlong post Thursby and Takarunga were together in the van. followed at a length and a-half interval by Desert Glow with Te Koroke, Master Doon. Higli Pitch, Queen Arch, Mervette, Gold Jacket and King Emerald. Approaching the straight Thursby held command being first into the home stretch from Desert Glow, Te Koroke, Mervette, Auriculus, Master Doon, Queen Arch. King Emerald and Takuranga. At the distance Queen Arch had joined issue with the leaders, Mervette, Thursby and Te Koroke also being in the limelight, the last-named being the first beaten. Then Queen Arch forged ahead to win by two and a-half lengths from King Emerald, who finished well. Mervette was half a length back, and Thursby fourth. Then came Te Koroke, Desert Glow, Gold Jacket, High Pitch and Auriculus. Hyde Park Improves

A seven-horse field contested the Mokau Handicap, the winner turning up in Hyde Park, who was much improved as a result of his race on Saturday. The favourites were Waltzer £1,339, Day Guard £1,249, Hyde Park £1,004 and King Smock £903. Harbour View, Flying Juliet, Day Guard, Waltzer, Saucy Lass, King Smock and Hyde Park was the order inside the first furlong, and approaching the halfmile Day Guard was making play a couple of lengths ahead of Harbour View. Flying Juliet, Waltzer, Saucy Lass and Hyde Park. At the turn for home Day Guard led from Saucy Lass, Waltzer and Hyde Park, this trio being in line, with King Smock, Harbour View and Flying Juliet further back. Once straightened up, Hyde Park went to the front and was never troubled to win by two and a-half lengths from Day Guard, who was a couple of lengths ahead of King Smock. Harbour View and Waltzer were right up next, with Saucy Lass and Flying Juliet following. Po uri Easily The Maniapoto Steeplechase was a chapter of accidents, only three of the eight starters finishing. Pouri £1,375 and Star of the East £1,057 carried the money, Kamehameha £676 being at the head of the other quotations. Over the water-jump the first time Star of the East, Bahadur, Hangawera, Pouri, Llewellyn, Kamehameha and Zircon were in close order. At the old waterjump Llewllyn fell, and at the next obstacle Fane unshipped his rider. On the hill Bahadur was in charge from Star of the East, Pouri, Kamehameha, Hangawera and Zircon. Star of the East, Pouri and Bahadur took the double together, with Kamehameha and Zircon at intervals, and the former came down heavily at the old waterjump. Pouri was eight lengths in advance of Star of the East on the hill the second time, with Bahadur making a run that took him up to the latter, and Zircon toiling on at the rear. Star of the East fell at 'the stone-wall, leaving Pouri to go on and score easily by 100 yards from Bahadur, with Zircon twice that distance away. Hangawera fell at the second of the double. The Beau Again Beau Cavalier led all the way in the Mairoa Handicap and won again, returning a much shorter price on this occasion. The favourite division comprised Nassock £1,133, Beau Cavalier £1,103, Mountain Guide £1,052 and Glendowie £751. Beau Cavalier led out of the straight from Piet, Plane Pearl, Killute, Nassock, Still Jim, Restaurant and Glendowie, and entering the ba~k stretch he was well clear of the fieM. At the live furlongs Beau Cavalier was three lengths in advance of Plano Pearl and Piet, with Cullgie, Killute, Glendowie, Mountain Guide and Restaurant following. Crossing the top the favourite ran up into second place, Beau Cavalier leading into the home stretch from Nassock, Plane Pearl, Glendowie, Mountain Guide, Cullgie, Killute, Still Jim and Restaurant. Nassock hotly challenged in the run home, but Beau Cavalier hung on under pressure and won by a length. Two and a-half lengths away was Killute, with Mountain Guide and Glendowie close up, after them being Restaurant, Still Jim, Cullgie, Plane Pearl and Miss Myrtle. Farewell to Thursby Making his second appearance of the day, Thursby won the- Farewell Handicap at a double-figure price. The favourites were Dave £1,998, Archeen £1,913 and Town Bird £1,069, Thursby carrying £461. Lorient 11. dwelt at the start. Appellant rushing to the front from Dave, Archeen, Town Bird, Tinoiti, Automne, Thursby and Festina Lente. At the end of two furlongs Town Bird ran up into second place and was almost up with Appellant at the home turn, Serang, Dave, Thursby. Lorient 11., Tinoiti, Archeen and Automne following in that order. At the distance Town Bird was in the van, but he ran about a lot, and Thursby came on the outer with an irresistible run that carried him home nearly a length in front of Lorient 11., who was also at a great price. A similar distance away were Town Bird and Archeen, then coming Serang, Dave, Muscari, Automne, Festina Lente and Tinoiti.
