GALA AT DEVONPORT

PREPARATIONS FOR OPENING OF WHARF

Elaborate preparations have been made by the Devonport Borough Council for the opening, at 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, of the new wharf. The importance of the structure to the North Shore has been recognised and gala touches will be given the ceremony.

Arrangements are in the hands of the council, and the Auckland Harbour Board has taken part in the drawing up of the various procedures. Guests from the City Council, the Chamber of Commerce, the Industrial Association, and similar bodies will leave the city by special ferry at 2.45 p.m. The boat is to cut a ribbon, and the visitors will be welcomed by the Mayor and the councillors of Devonport. Mr. M. H. Wynvard, acting-chairman of the Harbour Board, Mr. E. Aldridge, Mayor of Devonport, and the Hon. E. AY. Alison chairman of directors of the Devonport Ferry Company, will give short speeches. The street approach to the wharf will be decorated by the council, and the Harbour Board will have decorations at the L shelter at the Ferry Teo end. Afternoon tea is to be provided and music will be given by the Devonport Boys’ Band. Over 500 invitations have been issued, and among the representatives will be those from the four north boroughs.
