BUTTER AND CHEESE
AUCKLAND’S RECORD YEAR SEASON OF HEAVY PRODUCTION
Despite the fact that the dairying season, which closed on Saturday, saw one of the longest spells of dry weather experienced in the province for several years, the aggregate production of butter-fat fell little short of last year's record figures. Returns of the actual butter produced constituted a provincial record, but the figures for cheese were well below those of previous record years. Butter produced, according to returns supplied by the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Co., Ltd., amounted to 1,918,033 boxes, 11.039 more than in the previous dairying year, and constituted a further provincial record in this respect. Cheese, however, registered the effects of the dry spell to a considerably greater degree, the total production of 157.225 crates being 24,552 crates less than in the 1926-27 season. In terms of butter-fat the aggregate recorded production for the province over the season was 100,369,10011). compared with 101,446,200 lb in 1926-27, a decrease of little over 1 per cent. DETAILS OF THE RETURNS The following table shows the monthly receipts of boxes of butter and crates of cheese at the grading stores of the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company for the year, compared with the corresponding figures for the two preceding dairying years: BETTER
