"MUST PULL TOGETHER”
RAIL POLICY OUTLINED GENERAL MANAGER’S PLANS ** must be our motto, and we must al! pull together from the newest cadet to the general i manager.” An appeal in these terms fur c©, j operation was made by Mr. H. 11. Sterling. general manager of New Zo.ilaiwl Railways, when lie addressed railwaymen at the annual reunion of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Railway Officers' Institute on Saturday evening. “We've got a hard task ahead of us.” he said, ' but it is not mine alone, every railway officer is involved in it. ] and we must all pull together, j “I have publicly stated,” he said, “that I have confidence enough in the staff to believe that it can-run th« railways as well as they are run in any other part of the world. The New Zealanders can pull the country through: they have shown this on other fields.” Mr. Sterling went on to say that when he was asked to return to the Railway Department he had to make a momentous decision. “I thought,” he said, “if I had every man in the service behind me, I’d give it a go. Well, I have given it a go, and that’s the keynote of my policy.” Mr. Sterling said he wanted there to be no line of demarkation among officers of the service—they were all working together. He had no magic wand to bring about an economic millennium: but as prosperity came to the country, railwaymen must nhare in it. Speaking generally on the prospects of the railway service, he said that its prosperity depended on two things—the quality of the service and the price at which it could be given. “We must give the best possible service,” he said, “and it is my intention to move freely among my customers and my staff. The responsibility is or us to see that the service is made attractive.”
