Smailfield. of the Agricultural Department, in connection with the Mauku mangel growing competition, has been announced. Messrs. Pearson Bros., of Patumalioe. have been adjudicated winners, with Messrs. C. A. Crispe and L. j Knight, of Mauku. tieing for second I place. I Great interest is centred in the event, which is an annual one. and is promoted by the Mauku branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. NEW CHURCH FOR TE MATA FOUNDATION STONE LAID The foundation stone of a new Anglican church at Te Mata, a township between Hamilton and Raglan, was laid yesterday morning by Bishop Cherrington. The settlers, who have long felt the need for a permanent place of worship, have raised £650. and the work of erection will proceed immediately. The church will be controlled by a committee and will be administered by the Rev. G. A. Young, vicar of Raglan. OPOTIKI A. AND P. ASSN. TWO-DAY SHOW CONSIDERED The question of the advisability of holding a two-day show was discussed at length at the annual meeting of the Opotiki.A. and P. Association on Saturday evening, and was finally left in the hands of a committee. On the motion of Mr. Abbot, it was decided that it be a recommendation to the incoming committee that an endeavour be made to arrange a conference of various associations to go into the question of holding a Bay of Plenty Show Circuit and that an endeavour be made next show to considerably brighten the events. Owing to the wet day last show, the bal-ance-sheet showed that the association commenced the year with a credit of £47 18s 4d, and ended with a debit balance of £96. Tho following officers were elected: —President, Mr. C. T. Clark; vicepresidents, Messrs. F. Reid, M. Abbot; treasurer, Mr. A. Liraae; auditors, Messrs. W. Todd, N. F. Battle; committee, Messrs. W. A. Smith, M. Vanstone, F. Pile, Pi R. Burton, W. J. Thompson, W. G. Butler, Jas. Young, Arthur Young, J. T. Clark, J. H. Parkinson, M. Roberts and J. King.
WAIHI INTERESTS FIRE SUPERINTENDENT RESIGNS The quarterly meeting of the Waihi Fire Board was held on Thursday, Mr. E. Morgan presiding. Mr. H. V. Tregear and Mr. W. Skegg represented the insurance companies. The superintendent of the fire brigade, Mr. F. W. Stamp, wrot _* asking to be relieved of his position, as he found it impossible in view of his present occupation to carry out his duties as superintendent. Mr. Stamp expressed his willingness to accept any other position that the board might offer him. The resignation was accepted with regret, and Mr. W. E. Roberts, deputy-superintendent, was asked to carry out the duties of superintendent temporarily. The appointment of a successor to Mr. Stamp was deferred until the next meeting. It was decided to atik the Waihi Borough Council to undertake the work of painting the fire plugs with luminous paint, the board to supply the paint. * * * A large meeting of Waihi district suppliers of cream to the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company was held on Friday evening, Mr. Claude Hands presiding. Interesting addresses were given by Mr. G. L ichanan, one of the directors, and Mr. E. Harvey on the progress made by the company during the past year. In proposing, a vote of thanks to the speakers, Mr. Hands congratulated the company on its capable management and satisfactory development.
