CUSTOMS FIGURES SHOW BIG DECLINE

A big decrease in the Customs revenue collected at the Port of Wellington in June of this year is seen when the figures are compared with those for June last year. There is also a slight decrease in the beer duty collected. The figures are as follow, the amounts for the previous year being in parentheses:—Customs, £168,254 (£305,216); beer duty, £3,947 (£4,122). The figures for the six months ended June 30, 1928, compared with those of the same period last year, are: Customs, 1927, £3,182,819; 1928, £3,066,368. Beer duty, 1927, £65,620: 1928, £64,924. Although the Customs duty collected is slightly less than the average for this time of the year, June last year was an exceptional month on account of the large quantity of spirits cleared in anticipation of the change in the traiff. CHRISTCHURCH REVENUE £125,875 DOWN Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday. A decrease of £251,875 is shown in the Customs revenue collected at Christchurch for the half-year ended June 30. For the June quarter Of 1928 the Customs realised £223,752, and in the June quarter last year £308,238. For the month of June the figure was £75,577. compared with £46,624 in June, 1927. The motorspirit tajc, since it was imposed in February, has yielded £27,339.
