HIS MAJESTY’S
“THE SILENT HOUSE” The Maurice Moscovich Company attracted a large audience to His Majesty’s Theatre on Saturday, when the Chinese “thriller” play, “The Silent House,” was presented for the third time. In it Mr. Moscovitch plays still another character with the ease Ave have grown to expect of him. The greatest praise one can bestow on a villain is that he be hissed, and if the audience failed to bestow this distinction on Mr. Moscovitch it must have been that they were too frightened to do so. He certainly suggested the arch-demon. Mr. Nat Madison possesses the happy ability to veil his personality in the part he plays. He gives us a smooth, even performance, easily one of the best in the cast. It was carefully drawn and suggested without exaggeration. Miss Riccardo, a fragile figure in a sea of trouble and many men, looked attractive and acted with conviction. One doubts Avhether any woman could have borne her troubles so bravely, but Miss Riccardo made us believe it possible. Mr. Newson carried off the heroic honours Avith easy charm. His performance was carelessly careful and well sustained. Mr. Barry was periodically hilarious, as the lighter moments of the play demanded, though his methods are a trifle obvious. Mr. Curwen played a small role with distinction. Good character studies AA'ere given by Mr. Jarry and Mr. Blunt. “The Silent House” will be presented again this evening.
