BAY OF PLENTY OBJECTS TO TAUPO RAILWAY

“WASTE OF PURUf MONEY” TANEATUA EXTENSION URGED Press Association. OPOTIKI, To-day. Great indignation has been created throughout the Bay of Plenty by the decision of the Government to immediately commence the construction of the Rotorua-Taupo railway, it being considered that the present building of this line is uncalled for, and a waste of public money. On behalf of the Opotiki Count:/ Council, the chairman, Mr. J. H. Reid, dispatched the following telegram to Mr. Coates: “County electors view with general dissatisfaction and disappointment the Government’s decision to proceed with the railway from Rotorua to Taupo, while the main East Coast rcilway between Taneatua and Opotiki remains uncompleted. In view of th* insured revenue from the fertile sett l land between Taneatua and Opotiki* electors cannot understand the re: .' ti for the Government’s delay, and ur s that immediate provision be made for this extension.” It is understood that similar nv - sages have been forwarded to the Priino Minister from the Opotiki Chamber - f Commerce, the Farmers’ Union, ti-o Borough Council, Whakatane Com .if Council, and the Bay of Plenty Development League, which represents evn-v local body in the Bay of Plenty and K •- torua, and includes the chambers of commerce.
