OTHER INQUIRIES PENDING . Jockeys’ Appeals Disastrous IT was generally conceded that the Rotorua Racing- Club had tempered justice with mercy in meting out 12 months’ disqualification to three jockeys and six months’ disqualification to another. All four jockeys appealed, with the result that each one has had his disqualification increased to two years. Which was only to be expected. Further inquiries are pending relative to the running of certain events at the last Takapuna meeting, and also in a hurdle race at Pirongia • (a non-totalisator fixture) on Boxing Day.
The original disqualification of 12 months in the cases of Rennie, Carmont and Gilmer, and six months in the case of Mcßae, was imposed by the Rotorua Racing Club on the ground of corrupt practice in regard to the riding of horses in the tw£> high-weight handicaps at the Rotorua races last
February. The judicial committee held that Rennie, Mcßae and Gilmer rode with the intention of assisting Dress Circle to win the Pohutu High-weight Handicap on February 11, and that Mcßae and Rennie were party to a conspiracy that Mcßae’s horse, Lady Cintra, should win the Tarawera Highweight Haft dicap on February 13. Later it was held that Carmont was also a party to the conspiracy in each race. The four jockeys concerned all appealed, and in dismissing the appeals and increasing the penalty to two years’ disqualification in each case, the District Committee ordered that the deposits of £ 5 each should be forfeited. Takapuna Incident The District Committee also decided to ask the Takapuna Jockey Club to inquire into certain allegations made during the course of the inquiry regarding happenings connected with the running of that club’s high-w’eight handicaps last January, and to ask
the Alexandra Racing Club, Pirongia, to hold an inquiry into a question arising out of the running of the hurdle race at its race meeting last Boxing Day. The Rotorua judicial committee, in its finding, said it found the evidence insufficient to convict R. E. Thomson and G. Holland of being parties to the conspiracies, but drew the attention of the District Committee to “the statement made by Mcßae as to Holland’s malpractice at the Takapuna meeting.” It said the statement made by Mcßae was that Holland was a party to a “ready” at Takapuna. Other Jockeys Interested The Orewa High-weight Handicap at Takapuna on January 28 was won by Uralla (L. Coleman), with Bold Front (G. Holland) second, and Red Comet (S. Henderson) third. The other jockeys riding in the race were Rennie, Mcßae, E. Garrett, T. Chaplin and Thomson. The Waiwera High-weight Handicap on the second day was won by Red Comet (Henderson), with Pekatahi (Carmont) second, and Bold Front (Holland) third.- The other riders were Coleman, Mcßae, Thomson, Chaplin, H. Dulieu and A. McGregor. The Farmers’ Hurdle Race at Pirongia was won by Ivawa (R. Savage),
