A CATERPILLAR RACE
The other day I thought I would j collect caterpillars, so I got a big box j and plenty of ivy leaves and then went out to see if I could find any. I found quite a number basking in the sun and put them in the box and made holes in the lid so that they would have plenty of air. The next day I had a caterpillar race which was most exciting. Have you ever had one? First of all I shut up all the fowls so they could not eat them, and the furry things wriggled along with amazing swiftness, though some of them would double up in the middle of the race. The race was won by a long, wiry caterpillar that seemed to leap along. The ones that went to sleep I tickled with a piece of grass and they soon went on. The winner had a piece of ivy given to him, though he did not eat it. I am dying to see what sort of butterflies or moths they will turn into. —Gay du Faur (aged 11).
