FORCING THE BANKS
RATES ON OVERDRAFTS (THE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter) . WELLINGTON, To-day. j A proposal that the Government take a hand in forcing the banks to reduce their overdraft rates was advocated by Mr. W. E. Parry in the House yesterday. Mr. Parry drew attention to the dissatisfaction of farmers' unions and manufacturers’ associations with the existing position, and he asked if the Minister of Finance would take steps to compel the banks to make the rates for overdraft consistent with the dividends recently paid by the banks on their last year’s working. The Prime Minister, the Hon. J. G. Coates, pointed out that the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Downie Stewart, was absent. He therefore advised Mr. Parry to have his question put on the order paper, so that the Minister could deal with it early next week.
