BANKRUPT FARMER
ASSIGNEE CRITICISES ACTIONS (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, Thursday. The affairs of Henry Kells, an elderly farmer of Arapuni Road, Putararu, with five children, were investigated by the Official Assignee, Mr. J. H. Robertson. There was only one creditor present, Mr. W. R. Shaddock, and Mr. W. P. Gray, who represented him. In course of examination, bankrupt said lie had no assets, while his liabilities included two mortgages and sundry debts to doctors and an undertaker. Two years ago he found the interest mounting up on his mortgages, and he was unable to make the farm pay. He obtained a bill-of-sale for £9O from his wife, and sold ail the cattle and appurtenances. Instead of repaying interest on mortgages and State Advances, bankrupt admitted be repaid the money to his wife. He then went to live with his son at Putaruru. After further examination, the assignee adjourned the meeting, after criticising bankrupt's action in going off his farm without leaving any word to his debtors, or without attempting to pay D’’*’ something to them. Further investigations will be made into bankrupt's transactions.
