PRINCESS AND TIVOLI

“CHINATOWN CHARLIE” Johnny Hines, famous for his comedy screen characterisations, surpasses all previous performances in “Chinatown Charlie,” his latest First National Picture, which was shown at the Tivoli Theatre last evening. In “Chinatown Charlie,” which is from the pen of the prolific playwright, Owen Davis, the comedian gives an exceedingly realistic - interpretation of a guide on a New York sightseeing bus, a wax dummy, a Chinese mandarin, and a lover. The last is not the least, for in order to win the hand of yie heroine, portrayed by Louise Lorraine, Johnny puts up some fights worthy of a Western villain, and performs the thrilling stunt of walking across a human bridge the bodies of five acrobats swung together from a secondstorey fire-escape to the balcony of the mandarin’s palace, 25ft across the street. Equally enjoyable is the second picture, entitled “The Circus Show.” Hoot Gibson, a popular Western star, is seen at his best in this story of a circus outfit in the cowby country. A full supporting programme is also shown and suitable incidental music by the orchestra. The Princess Theatre, which was closed for alterations last night, will open at U p.m. to-day. “That Certain Thing” is the title of a sparkling comedy of life featuring Ralph Graves and Viola Dana. The plot revolves round the romance of a little shopgirl.
