Mr Cecil Quane, of Christchurch, is visiting Auckland, and is staying at tie Central Hotel. Mr N. Heath, Consul for Latvia, returned to Auckland by train from Wellington yesterday morning. Mr. A- Slinger, engineer of the Takaouna Borough Council, has been seriously ill for the past fortnight. Mr. E. Casey, divisional superintendent, North Island Railways, left for the South by the Limited last evening. The Hon. F. Mander, M.L.C., and the Hon. Vernon Reed, M.L.C., left for Wellington by the Limited last evening. Mr. A. Harris, Mr. W. E. Parry, Mr. H. G. R. Mason and Mr. A. M. Samuel, members of Parliament, left for Wellington by the Limited last evening. Mr. S. Culverhouse, of Ashburton, was appointed assistant-secretary of the Ashburton Hospital Board out of 78 applicants. Mr- K. H. Lay, sanitary inspector for the Takapuna Borough Council, has been appointed sanitary inspector to the Auckland City Council. Mr. G. Frua, of the Auckland Manufacturers’ Association, has returned to Auckland after attending the meeting of the Wellington Manufacturers* Association. Mr. A. J. le Roy, treasurer to the Kowhai Junior High School Committee, and Mrs. E. W. Wilson, retiring secretary, last evening were presented with a wallet and a brass vase respectively by Mr. A. A. Buckley, chairman, on behalf of the committee and the staff. Mr. Frederick Sidney Pope, assistantdirector of agriculture, and previously secretary of the Department of Agriculture, is retiring at the end of the year, having pased both the age limit and the service limit within a few months. He belongs to a well-known Wellington family, and is a son of the late Mr. H. Pope, who founded the Dominion’s system of native education, and was for years inspector of Maori schools.
