DALMENY GETS HOME
CONSISTENCY REWARDED After Dalmeny’s placed performances at Dunedin last month and His subsequent form at Epsom on Saturday which gained him a portion of the stake on his two outings, it was not surprising to find W. J. Tomkinson's charge leading the field home yesterday in the Prince of Wales Handicap. XT IS splendid showing in the Mark Memorial on Saturday, caused the local pacer Gold Jacket to be elected favourite for the Prince of Wales handicap, carrying £BBS, the trotter Peterwah, who was the handicapper’s tip, on account of being left on the same mark as that from which he finished second on Saturday, being next in demand with £845, while £709 was invested on the consistent Dalmeny, who had not been out of a place in the last six starts. Tom Thumb was withdrawn from the contest, but his stable-mates Logan Chief and Talaro were supported to the extent of £6BB, the rest being at any price. When the field got on the journey Talent and Lady Dunmore tangled and Gold Jacket dashed up to take a position behind Lock Moigh and E>almeny, who began in good style. The favourite broke and lost.his position, but was going strongly again when the straight was reached. He was not
able to handle the going:, however, and soon faded out. Passing the stands the first time Dalmeny and Native Prince were in the van from Talent, Loch Moigh, Logan Chief, Talaro, Gold Jacket and Peter Swift, and in the second circuit Gold Jacket and Native Prince both broke and were pulled up. Dalmeny was still in the van passing the stands the second time, with a lap to go, with Logan Chief, Peterwah, Talent, Loch Moigh, Talaro, Lady Dunmore and Imprint in that order. Down the back Peterwah was lying just behind Dalmeny and Logan Chief, the rest being out of it, but the trotter got up in the air and had no sooner settled down than he broke again. Logan Chief broke, too, on the turn for home, leaving Dalmeny to win by two and a-half lengths from Peterwah, with six length® back to Talaro. Two lengths away was Loch Moigh, and then in order came Talent, Lady Dunmore, Imprint, Peter Swift, and Logan Chief. The winner is owned by the popular Dunedin sportsman, Mr. Geo. Barton, and is trained by W. J. Tomkinsen, who drove him a confident race.
