CURTAIN LOWERED

Trotting Season Terminated By Auckland Winter Carnival

KEEN SPORT UNDER DIFFICULTIES

•THE 1927-28 trotting season was brought to a close yester--1 day with the conclusion of the Auckland Winter Carnival at Alexandra Park, when despite atrocious conditions both overhead and underfoot, some very interesting sport was provided. *

THE elements yesterday were disA tinctly unfavourable for the continuation of the Auckland winter card, but with the Te Kuiti racing programme being staged at Elierslie on Saturday, the club had no alternative but to proceed with the function. Bad as the conditions proved, there was a fair attendance, and despite the dreadful state of the track the racing proved interesting. The course early became a sea of mud, and the unpleasant conditions quickly upset general calculations. So prevalent was the mud that after the first race or two it was almost impossible to distinguish the horses and their drivers. Excellent Management Everything however passed off without mishap or trouble of any kind, and the management was excellently administered. The officials worked willingly against the heavy odds to make the function

pleasant and successful, while again at the helm was secretary A. G. Mabee to see that everything was in good order. Owing to the greatly reduced attendance the totalisator turnover suffered seriously, the deficit for the meeting reaching £23,943. The figures for the day were £24,862, against £44,321 10s on the sceond day last year, while the respective totals for both days were: 1927, £59,890 10s; 1928, £65,956 10s. The judiciary stewards held an inquiry into an incident connected with the Mangere Handicap on the opening day, by which HohorVs sulky wheels were broken and in addition Luvan and Heather Girl were interfered with and put out of the race. After hearing evidence the stewards decided to fine J. T. Paul, driver of Hohoro, for careless driving. A review of the racing, together with results, is appended. Uramic Likes It Uramic took charge two furlongs from home in the Manukau Handicap, best-backed were Harvest Child £265, Master Huia £205, Admiral £165, Uncle Bert £l5O and Uramic £123. Hohora led out of the straight from Master Huia, Peter Grattan, Red Star, Beatty and Mars. Passing the stands the second time Master Huia and Mars were together ahea'd of Uramic, Master Councillor, Peter Grattan, Admiral Lock, Red Star and Harvest Child. Down the back Master Huia was just in front of Mars and Uramic, with half a dozen lengths back to Admiral Lock and Harvest Child. Uramic led into the straight from Master Huia, Harvest Child, Mars and Admiral Lock, the leader going on to score by a length and a-half from Master Huia, with Harvest Child half a length back. Mars was a fair fourth, and then came Admiral Lock, Hohora, Red Star and Scandal. Kolmar’s Royal Handicap The pace set by the leaders in the Royal Handicap effectively settled the chances of the favourite, Raima, who

failed to make up any of his handicap over the first mile. Raima was entrusted with £524. others claiming fair support being Callboy, £369, and Maxegin, £307. Callboy was in charge at the end of half a mile. followed by Kolmar, Etta Cole, Repute Colonel Thorpe, Sebisca. Roez, Roma Bingen, and Golden Gate. Passing the stands the next time, Kolmar. Callboy, Etta Cole, Sebisca, Repute Colonel Thorpe, and Raima were in that order, with a good gap between them. Kolmar was well clear along the back, and led into the straight from Sebisca, Etta Cole, Raima, and Repute, and went on to win by two and a-half lengths from Sebisca, with Etta Cole three lengths away. Colonel Thorpe was another couple of lengths back fourth, after whom were Repute and Raima. A Spirited Duel ! The Members’ Trot was a fine race between two horses only. The favI ourites were Young Blake £859, Rose

Bingen £750 and Tamerlane £4BO. Tiger Salve and Tamerlane were to-

gether passing the post the first time from Tradesman, Rose Bingen, Great Change and Petroleuse, several horses having left their feet prior to this. Over the next circuit Rose Bingen, who made up her handicap smartly, was with Tamerlane in the lead, and with Tiger Salve, Tradesman, Real the Great and Young Blake set out on the last round. Down the back Rose Bingen and Tamerlane left the opposition, and it Avas not until 30 yards from the judge that the latter weakened, leaving Rose Bingen to win by two lengths. Young Blake was six lengths away, and then came Real the Great (who was turned round at the start) and Tiger Salve. Dillon Huon Easily Nineteen contested the Liverpool Handicap, the favourite being a threehorse bracket comprising Dillon Huon, Free Advice and Parkwood £699, and the first mentioned pulled them through. Hohora was the early leader from Mars, Dillon Huon, Cora Tacks and Daytime. At the end of the first half mile Mars had taken up the running from Dillon Huon, Hohora, Daytime and Van Rich, and a little further on Dillon Huon hit the front, leading along the back from Mars, Hohora, Daytime, Pageant and Kughie Wallace. Dillon Huon had a break of half a dozen lengths into the straight and was not troubled to score by that margin from Daytime, with Pageant three lengths further off. Harvest Child and Hughie Wallace were together a length and a-half away, being followed by Gold Dial and Hohora. Cardinal Logan by a Nose

The three-horse bracket, Tom Thumb, Talaro and Logan Chief, was favourite with £905 in the Au Revoir Handicap, others well supported being Cardinal Logan £SBB and Dalmeny (penalised 12 yards) £702. Talent got away best at the release, being followed down the back by All Bell, Cardinal Logan and Tom Thumb. Talent held his position passing the stands, being attended by Tom Thumb, All Bell, Cardinal Logan, Talaro, Logan Chief, Dalmeny and Peter Bingen. Half a mile from home Logan Chief and Dalmeny improved their positions. Into the straight the order was Ta'ient, Tom Thumb, Cardinal Logan, Dalmeny and Logan Chief. Cardinal Logan challenged over the last bit and got up to

beat Talent by a nose, with Imprint five lengths back third. Tom Thumb was fourth, and tl*3 next to cross the muddied line were Jewel Pointer, Dalmeny and All Bell.
