GUILTY ON FIVE CHARGES LIVED TOO LONG ASHORE .'Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday. A sailor, named Angus Macneill, aged 30. who got tired of the sea. decided to take a spell on land. He appeared in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, and pleaded guilty to five charges of fraud and theft. The total value of the goods and money concerned was £23 15s. "Accused is a sailor.” said ChiefDetective Carroll. "He deserted at Lyttelton and thought he would like to see the country. so he stole a bicycle and set out. He obtained credit from hotelkeepers and storekeepers by producing letters which purported to show that he held money in the bank. He eventually turned up at Rakaia. where he fell into the hands of the police by getting arrested for drunkenness.” On one charge of obtaining credit by fraud. Macneill was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment. and on the other charges he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within two years.
