NEW REGENT

“THE LAST WALTZ” TO-MORROW The British film, “The Flight Commander,” with Sir Alan Cobham, will be shown for the last time at the New Regent this evening. To-morrow, the picture “The Last Waltz,” will be shown, acted by a strong all-star cast. “The Last Waltz” is the romance of a gallant young officer who captures a lovely princess from under the very guns of a firing squad. There’s mystery and drama —spectacle and court intrigue—all to the strains of an old waltz. The leading female actress is Suzy Vernon, a French girl who first came into prominence by winning a beauty contest conducted by “Le Journal,” a Parisian newspaper. She is threequarters French, and one-quarter Spanish, and is a well-known leading woman in French motion pictures. “The Last Waltz” is a picturisation of the famous operetta of the same name, produced some years ago by the

Schuberts, the music being written by the famous musician Oscar Strauss. It is a tremendously dramatic story, and will be enjoyed by all who see it. Mr. Maurice Guttridge has prepared a special musical score for the picture, and this will be presented by the Regent Operatic Orchestra. A second attraction will also be presented in “The Showdown,” starring George Bancroft and Evelyn Brent. Played in the remote districts of Mexico’s back country, where every man is a potential enemy, “The Showdown” finds Bancroft playing the role of a wandering oil driller. Into his life come three men who have followed him from one field after another, because they know he has a sixth sense which tells him where oil can be found. As the struggle between Bancroft and his rivals settles into grim and deadly earnest, a girl suddenly arrives, fresh from the refinements of New York. The situations which develop from the presence of a gently nurtured girl in this wild spot form a drama from which Bancroft’s genius as an actor shines with great lustre.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s South Seas expedition has completed all the exterior scenes for “Southern Skies.” under the direction of Robert Flaherty in Tahiti, and has returned to the studios after being nearly four months in the islands. Monte Blue plays the leading male role.
