Constable Knocked Down by Motor-Car
CRASH INTO SHOP PASSENGERS UNHURT As Constable W. A. Rathie was testing the lock of IVS r. C. Horscroft’s fruit shop on the corner of Quadrant Road and Trafalgar Street, Onehunga, at 11.45 last evening, he was suddenly knocked down by a motor-car which came careering across the footpath and through the shop doors and window. Extricating himself from the wreckage, the constable discovered that the car, nominally a two-seater, contained four passengers, two men and two women. The car was driven by Mr. V. G. Harkins, of Parkdale Road, Mount Albert, and belonged to Alder and Co.. Ponsonbv. The driver said that he was approaching Onehunga from the city and in trying to turn out of Manukau Road into Trafalgar Street, the car skidded on the wet pavement and he lost control. One of the double doors of the shop was smashed off its hinges, and forced into the middle of the shop. The plate-glass window was smashed to atoms and the whole of the shop front was thrown out of alignment. The car and the passengers escaped with but slight injuries, but the constable’s hand was badly knocked about. The window was insured.
