RIDER'S LEGS BROKEN
VAN STRIKES HORSEMAN SHEEP AND DOG KILLED Press Association. NAPIER, Wednesday. An accident, involving a motor-van and a horseman, in which Mr. Fred Pipe, of Hastings, butcher, had both his legs broken, besides suffering minor injuries, occurred in Karamu Road, Hastings, about five o’clock this afternoon. The vehicle involved was a light van owned by the Central Hawke’s Bay Power Board, and driven by Mr. Samuel Haughton. Besides the injuries to Mr. Pipe four sheep and a dog belonging to him were killed and the horse he was riding was so badly hurt that it had to be destroyed. The sheep and the dog were struck by the van first and killed, and then the horse was knocked over and fell with his rider. Mr. Pipe is in hospital and his condition is reported to be satisfactory. The van was considerably damaged, but the driver escaped unhurt.
