LINE TO COST £700,000 After examining: 36 witnesses and traversing the route from Rotorua via Hemo Gorge and Waiotapu, and the Waikato to Taupo. the commission of 1922 found that there was no likelihood of the railway returning sufficient revenue to meet working and interest charges. The commissionQrs considered a line of 54i miles with ruling grades of 1 in 60 could be built in seven years for £700.000. Rolling stock would cost £30,000. Interest charges at 4 per cent, would be £30,000 a year.
