The women of Raurimu have formed a basketball club, with the following officers: President, Mrs. A. L. Wilson; vice-presidents, Mrs. H. B. Hill and Mrs. A. Naylor; secretary, Miss I. Coffin; club captain, Miss E. L. Zachariah; vice-captain, Mifj I. Hill. Mr. H. B. Hill has donated *a ball to the new club. * * * The recently-constituted Kaitieke Ladies’ Sports Club gave a most enjoyable dance last week, which was attended by visitors from considerable distances. The Trevena Trio played for the dancing, and several extras were given. A guessing competition for a trophy given by Mrs. J. Dempsey was won by Mr. A. Davey, who returned his prize to be auctioned, the result considerably augmenting the funds. Mr. T. Treacy gave a delightful musical monologue, and the club patroness, Mrs. J. Waldegrave, returned thanks to the visitors. Mrs. Crocker, the president, also spoke. The proceeds are to be devoted toward the provision of a tennis court. A splendid concert was put on at Ohura by the combined Ohura and Mangakara school children, when the local hall was filled to overflowing. Effective decorations and special lighting added to the pleasure of the entertainment, which was under the management of Mr. D. Mac Kay, headmaster at Ohura. Mr. Wakeford, chairman of the School Committee, asked the teachers to accept thanks for the time and care they had spent in training the children. Mr. Mac Kay expressed his gratitude to the school staffs and to Mrs. K. B. Turnbull, who assisted at the piano, and Mesdames Sliutt and Geange, who had given valuable assistance in preparing the various items. m * * Among those who were successful in attaining the degree of Bachelor of Arts at the Auckland University College was Miss M. B. Brown, well known in the Taumarunui district. # * * The Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union conducted a most successful “Country Ball” at Taringamotu, the accommodation at the local hall being almost inadequate for the large crowd that assembledMusic was supplied by Mrs. McHattie (piano), and Mr. E. McHattie (violin), extras being given by Misses A. Hawson, Bolland and Needham, Mrs. D. McElroy and Mr. A. Congdon. Miss I. Merry and Mr. G. Naylor won a novelty dance competition, the prizes being donated by Mrs. Q. E. Manson, Mayoress of Taumarunui, and Mrs. D. McElroy respectively. Mr. Blacklock, organiser of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, and Mrs. Blacklock wei% present. * * * The Taumarunui Methodist Church held a social evening at Mrs. Murray’s tea-rooms, when games and sev-
eral novel competitions, community singing and vocal and instrumental renderings provided a capital programme. Master Edwards, who won a competition called “Fish Oh,” very generously surrendered his right in favour of Miss Shepherd, who was the next nearest correct. Mrs. A. E. Perry won an “observation” competition.
The first euchre tournament of the season conducted by tfcie Raurimu Hall Committee has just concluded, the winners of the final games being Miss Anderson and Mr. S. Gibson. The
points prize-winners for the series were Miss B. Clarke and Mr. A. Naylor. The tournament proved so popular and successful that the committee intends commencing a second immediately. * * * Prior to her marriage to Mr. A. Deadman, Miss Mary Box was given a pleasant “kitchen evening” at Owhango, Mesdames Hingston and Anderson being the hostesses. Mr. A. Deadman briefly returned thanks on the guest’s behalf. Dancing and games, vocal and musical items completed a happy evening.
