CANADIAN GOVERNMENT MERCHANT MARINE. —According to cable advices from Ottawa, the ninth annual report of the board of directors of the Canadian Government Merchant Marine, Ltd., for the 12 months ending December 31 last, shows that the past year’s working has not been at all satisfactory, says “Fairplay,” the accounts disclosing an operating loss of 720,000 dollars, which compares with 90,160 dollars in 1926, 948,053 dollars in 1925 and 1,440,880 dollars in 1924. It is pointed out that the less favourable result of last year is attributable to special conditions—shortage of cargo and increased competition. CANADIAN PACIFIC STEAMSHIPS. —The directors of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, for the 12 months ending December 31 last, in ref ex-ring to the working of the Canadian Pacific Steamships, Ltd., state that the year showed a decrease in revenue on the Atlantic and an increase on the Pacific, with the result that the net earnings of the entire fleet were moderately increased, says “Fairplay.” The company’s ocean and coastal steamships cost 76,591,884 dollars, and up to the end of last year 16,130,715 dollars had been set aside for steamship replacement, so that the “net earnings ocean and coastal steamship lines” of 2,442,129 dollars does not suggest that the company made anything like an adequate profit on its shipping lines. The directors have ordered for the North Atlantic service the construction of two first-class 18-knot, twin screw, geared turbine oil-burning passenger and cargo eteamers from Messrs. John Brown and Company, to be delivered in January and March next year, and are of opinion that an additional vessel should be ordered for the Pacific service and another firstclass vessel for the Quebec-Southampton service. MOTOR-SHIP PROFITS.—Our contemporary “Fairplay,” which is usually fair in its statement of any case, in a recent issue records a conversation with the head of a liner company, who showed our contemporary the consumption tables of three similar one being a Diesel ship, a second an oilfired steamer, and a third a coal-fired vessel, says the “Motor Ship.” On a long voyage the Diesel ship cost about one-third for fuel as compared with the coal-burning steamer. The authority in question gave it as his opinion that there was no doubt that for his trade the Diesel-engined ship was the most efficient proposition. As regards the performance of other passenger liners, the economy and increased earnings of the “Gripsholm” compared with steamdriven passenger liners in the same service have already been recorded, and we are informed that the same result has been noted in the passenger liners of the Xetherland Steamship Company, one of which shows a profit of £7,500 per voyage above that of a corresponding steamer. WITHIN WIRELESS RANGE— The following vessels are expected to be within range of the undermentioned wireless stations to-night:— Auckland: Tofua, Maui Pomare, Voco, Port Curtis, Pipiriki, Sonoma, Northumberland, Port Dennison, Kawatiri. Chatham Islands: Arawa. Wellington: Maori, Wahine, Tamahine, Arahura, Ruahine, Matakana, Otokia, Plume, Port Sydney, Hauraki, Rimutaka, ♦Villastqn. Awarua: Makura, Maunganui, Waikouaiti. Tutanekai. Paua, (Cumberland. Karetu.
