CANTERBURY CLAIMS LEAST UNEMPLOYMENT
FIGURES_EXAMINED * LOOKING FOR CAUSE Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH. To-day. In an effort to determine the primary causes of unemployment, and its extent and distribution, a conference of representatives of the local bodies in Canterbury was held in the Chamber of Commerce Hall this morning, under the auspices of the Canterbury Progress League. Examining the figures for the Christchurch district, Professor Tocker, of the chair of economics at Canterbury College, said they showed that about 2J per cent, of the wage-earners were unemployed. This was unusual for Christchurch, but it wae not an unusual percentage in other countries. Trade union figures were not as reliable as those of the Government bureaux, as they included as unemployed men who were not working at their own trade, but might be working at other occupations. However, there was a striking similarity in the figures of the trades union and the Government bureaux. The figures showed that unemployment was heaviest in Auckland, lighter in Wellington and Otago, and lightest of all, according to statistics, in Canterbury.
