HIRE-PURCHASE SYSTEM
VICTORIA LEAGUE DEBATE Whether the hire-purchase system is an economic evil was the subject of argument at the monthly meeting of the Victoria League last evening. The debaters were members of the University College Students’ Association. The affirmative was taken by Dr. J. C. Andrews and Mr. J. N. Wilson, the negative being taken by Mr. G. L. McLeod and Mr. C. R. Straubel. The supporters of the proposal said that the hire-purchase schemes were pernicious to the buyer, the seller and the community generally. The speakers for the negative said that admitted abuse of the system provided no argument in itself to show the system was evil but, on the contrary, it enforced thrift by saving. By a substantial majority the meeting expressed itself in favour of the affirmative.
