KOWHAI HIGH SCHOOL
STEADY PROGRESS MADE COMMITTEE’S REPORT Steady progress in all departments is shown by the report of the Kowhai Junior High School Committee, which will be presented at a meeting of parents and guardians this evening. For 1926 and last year the reports of the inspectors, both in primary and secondary work, were very satisfactory. A special report on the efficiency of the school by the senior inspector, Mr. C. W Garrard, which had been asked for by the Mount Eden School Committee, was very favourable. The public examinations at the end of 1927 resulted in eight junior national scholarships and four Public Service entrance passes, as, well as 15 senior free places, being secured. In addition to 40 junior free places awarded in the junior national scholarship examination, over 400 free places were granted from the school. The school opened in 1928 with 891 pupils on the roll. For the purpose of improving the school grounds £7O had been raised by parents and residents, and with the department’s subsidy of £ for £, the committee had been able to expend £l4O on the work. The total amount in the Auckland Savings Bank to the credit of the pupils is £437. The committee brings under the notice of parents the continual changing of teachers at the school, which it considers is detrimental to the best interests of the school. The school had been successful in sport. In the cricket competitions three teams had competed, one winning the Earl Cup. In the football competitions there were five Rugby teams and four Association teams. There was also one hockey team and seven basketball teams.
