IN THE MARKET PLACE

CHEAPER BANANAS EGG PRICES STEADY Both oranges and bananas are selling at low market levels in the city marts at the moment. In the field and garden produce section onions and potatoes are dearer. THE Waipahi’s shipment of approximately 14,000 cases of oranges came to hand over the week, and sold freely, with originals making from 9s to 11s a case, and repacks around 12s 6d a case. A shipment of tomatoes by the same boat realised from 9s to 11s a 221 b case, with a few extra choice lots making slightly better money. Hothouse tomatoes have registered a slight decline in values over the past few’days. Demand For Apples Dull The market for apples continues rather dull, with ample supplies coming forward. The Tofua is at present down in the Islands, and is due back here with a further shipment on July 9. Supplies of kumeras are becoming scarce, and these tubers are not offering so freely as they were a month ago. Most green vegetables are coming forward freely, showing greatly improved quality. KAURI AT WAIMAUKU

PURCHASE OF 31 ACRES An offer has been obtained for the preservation of 31 acres o£ bush at Waimauku, and a subscription list to raise funds for the purchase of the area has been opened. This announcement was made in a report at last evening’s annual meeting of the Auckland Council of the New Zealand Horticultural Institute. Mr. D. A. Hay said that as a fund contribution, Mr. W. R. Wilson had offered a Takapuna section. This was to be valued immediately. The institute’s move is significant from a national standpoint, in view of the startling depletion of kauri areas within recent years.
