Gaelic Greeting
Eminent Tenor Visits Auckland MR. O’SHEA ARRIVES “Cead mile failte.” Mr. Alfred O’Shea, the celebrated Irish tenor, gave the time honoured Gaelic greeting as he stepped off the Limited this morning. “One hundred thousand welcomes,” answered a large group of admirers who were waiting to extend the hand of friendship to the eminent visitor. Business men and musicians, and members of the Church, all paid their respects to Mr. O’Shea at the railway station this morning, and the genial Irishman need not feel lonely while in Auckland. He was assured by Mr. J. J. O’Brien, on behalf of those present, that Auckland had a far better climate than Sydney, and that the weather here was the best in New Zealand. He extended .to the distinguished visitor a hearty welcome to the city. “Aucklanders,” he added, “were very musical and were excellent judges of music and song.” Mr. O’Shea, who quickly showed his appreciation of the thoughtful and hearty welcome, said that it would be an inspiration to him. He felt that he did not wish to talk about himself. He would leave his new-found friends to form their own impressions of him after they had heard him sing. Mr. O’Shea, who will make his first appearance in Auckland at the Town Hall this evening, has been accorded enthusiastic receptions in Wellington and other Southern centres. The tenor was accompanied by Mr. Scott Colville, his manager.
