MOTOR-SHIP DELAYED THREE DAYS BY GALE
TARANAKI AT LYTTELTON DAMAGED BY SEAS
(Special to THB SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday.
The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s new motor-ship Taranaki, a sister ship to the Zealandic, arrived in Lytelton this afternoon on her maiden voyage, being three days overdue.
The Taranaki sailed from Liondon on May 18 and had fair weather across the Atlantic. On June 17 she ran into bad weather with head swells from the south-west. The weather became worse and on Thursday last the gale reached its height and the ship was practically hove-to all day. Mountainous seas were running and the ship was badly tossed about. She took one big sea over the stern, which damaged the hospital on the main aft deck. The steel sides of the hospital were slightly buckled and considerable damage was done to the w’ooden fittings inside. Seas also carried away the awning spars from the forecastle head and the stanchions were badly twisted. Thqj-e were no casualties, but one of the cadets was knocked over by a sea. The gale abated on Sunday and the ship had fine weather until her arrival today.
