SIR W. PERCEVAL DEAD
(United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) LONDON, Saturday. The death has occurred of Sir Westby Brook Perceval, who was formerly Agent-General for New Zealand and also for Tasmania. Sir Westby Brook Perceval celebrated liis 74th birthday recently. He was born in Tasmania of Irish parentage. He was educated at Christ’s College, Christchurch, and at Stonyhurst College, England. He was called to the Bar in 1878, and practised in New Zealand. He married in 1880 Miss Johnson, of Wellington. He represented one of the Christchurch seats in the New Zealand Parliament from 1887 to 1891, being Chairman of Committees in 1891. From 1891 to 1896 he was Agent-General in London for New Zealand, and for Tasmania, 1896 to 1898. In 1891 Pope Leo XIII. created Sir Westby a Knight of St. Gregory the Great. Other positions which were held by Sir Westby were, member of Royal Commission for Chicago Exhibition, 1894-1895; Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts; member of Royal Commission for Paris Exhibition, 1900; and member of the Tariff Commission, 1904. He was created K.C.M.G. in 1894.
