IRISH SEA SWIM FAILS

land, to Portpatrick, Scotland, waa made by Miss Mercedes Gleitze. the London typiste. She abandoned the attempt after swimming 22 miles in six hours. Early in April Miss Gleitze swam the Straits of Gibraltar. Last year she swam the English Channel, and, in recognition of her achievement, the “News of the World” presented her with a cheque for £SOO. Miss Gleitze signed a threemonths’ contract to give two exhibition swims a day at Blackpool, with a provision that she was to be allowed time off for her Irish swim. She also expected to meet Miss Lottie Schommel. the American champion swimmer, in an endurance swim in America, and not a as originally proposed. The pomoters offered Miss Gleitze a purse of £2OO. win or lose. She held out for £2OO if she lost, or £I,OOO an hour for every hour she outstayed Miss Schommel.
